That Never Happened Premiere on Nov 17

Join us for a Rocky Mountain Premiere of THAT NEVER HAPPENED documentary screening and reception in Banff on Nov 17, 2017.

For more information about transportation to/from Banff & admissions click here

TNH Promo Poster 8.5x11 Banff copy

THAT NEVER HAPPENED reveals the story of Canada’s first national internment operations between 1914 – 1920, when over 88,000 people were forced to register and more than 8,500 were wrongfully imprisoned in concentration camps across Canada, not for anything they had done but because of where they came from. In 1954, the public records were destroyed and in the 1980s a few brave men and women began working to reclaim this chapter in history and ensure future generations would know about it.

Conference of League of Ukrainian Canadians (LUC) in Canmore 2017

On September 16 and 17, the Calgary Chapter of the League of Ukrainian Women in Canada was invited to join the Edmonton Chapter of the League of Ukrainian Canadians at the Ramada Hotel in beautiful Canmore, Alberta for a weekend conference.

Before the Conference opened on Saturday evening, a busload of members from Edmonton was able to visit Banff and take in the sights. Yaroslaw Szewczuk and Ihor Krys reported about the projects of LUC in Edmonton, while Ivanka Szewczuk and our very own Iryna Zhygimont reported on the Edmonton and Calgary Branches, respectively. Following an informative discussion about membership issues, projects and joint collaboration, we had an opportunity to exchange and share ideas for the future. We mingled and enjoyed a lovely dinner. Many of us stayed up late to socialize and enjoy some humorous anecdotes, jokes and wonderful impromptu singing! This is what we call a tovarys’ka zustrich!

Sunday morning started with a hearty breakfast followed by a drive out to Johnston Canyon. LUC members laid a wreath at the Internment commemoration monument, installed by the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association. This site is very close to the original Castle Mountain Internment camp and was where we joined in prayer and the singing of Vichnaya Pam’yat. It was a very moving tribute to those who were interned and/or perished here, many of whom were Ukrainian. We proceeded into Banff to visit the WWI Internment Museum at the Cave and Basin.

We wish to thank our generous hosts and colleagues, the League of Ukrainian Canadians, Edmonton Chapter, for their hospitality and friendship! We look forward to future gatherings and joint projects!

UWC calls to boycott World Festival of Youth and Students hosted by Russian Federation

sku

MEDIA RELEASE

UWC calls upon international community to boycott
World Festival of Youth and Students being hosted by Russian Federation

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) is calling upon the international community, specifically youth and student organizations, and governments worldwide to boycott the World Festival of Youth and Students being hosted by the Russian Federation from 14-22 October 2017.

Supporting the call of the Government of Ukraine, the UWC draws attention to the blatant violation by the Russian Federation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity with this event which takes place on the temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation Ukrainian territory, specifically the cities of Sevastopol and Simferopol.

Foreign delegations will be traveling freely across borders in violation of the UN Charter, Resolutions of the UN General Assembly and OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, as well as other multilateral international treaties to which Ukraine and the Russian Federation are signatories.

The organization of this Festival crudely mocks the international community which has resolutely condemned the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, including the illegal occupation of Crimea and imposed sanctions in response to these actions.

The World Festival of Youth and Students is yet another example of the tactics of the Russian Federation in its hybrid war involving, in this instance, young people to undermine the territorial integrity of a sovereign state.

“The Ukrainian World Congress calls upon governments to ensure that their youth and students are not used to promote the disinformation being spread by the Russian Federation by issuing a boycott of the World Festival of Youth and Students,” said UWC President Eugene Czolij.

The UWC is the international coordinating body for Ukrainian communities in the diaspora representing the interests of over 20 million Ukrainians. The UWC has a network of member organizations and ties with Ukrainians in 53 countries. Founded in 1967, the UWC was recognized in 2003 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council as a non-governmental organization with special consultative status.

Fun Flea Markets

Over the past several years, League members organized flea markets on multiple occasions – 20 June, 2015, 17 October, 2015, 18 June, 2016, and most recently 17 June, 2017. We sold jewelry, household items, and traditional Ukrainian decorations, as well as baked goods. We often schedule our flea markets on Neighbour Day, when the local community is out and about and we can meet the people who live by our Ukrainian Youth Centre. The locals seemed interested in our organization and were pleased to purchase items from us. Flea markets are extremely successful events for our League, helping us raise funding designated for local and Ukrainian charities, such as the Guardian Angels Ukraine project and Ukrainian-Canadian initiatives.

We are grateful to Maria Shysh, Oksana Kuzyshyn, Teresa Zalucky, Stephanie Savyn, Tetiana Chekhovych, Hanna Zavrazhyna, Larysa Faulkner and Vitana Sydor for their dedication and hard work. Special thanks to Hamed Ghaffari for helping with sales and Danylo Zalucky and John Kushnir for set up and tear down.

Ukrainian Festival 2017

League of Ukrainian Women in Canada showcased its activities at the annual Ukrainian Festival held in Calgary. We set up a community table displaying pictures of recent League events and an Anniversary Quilt embroidered by our members several years ago to commemorate the 1025th anniversary of Christianity in Ukraine. Special thanks to Stefania Savyn and Teresa Zalucky for setting up the table so all guests and participants of the Calgary Ukrainian Festival could visit our display and see what we do and what we contribute to the Ukrainian-Canadian community.

Dinner for the Honourary League Members

On May 12, 2017, the League organized a ladies dinner to honour the senior members of our organization! Katrusia Bohdan chauffeured the three ladies to the restaurant where a delicious meal was served. The general membership had a chance to thank Maria Danylchuk, Kateryna Moroz and Anna Sadiwnyk for their 50+ years commitment and dedication to the Ukrainian community in Calgary. They were presented with roses and many hugs and kisses. This event also allowed the membership to extend its appreciation and farewell to past President Oksana Kuzyshyn, who will be moving to Montreal this summer. As a token of appreciation for her energy and outstanding leadership, flowers, an icon and a set of pearls were presented. Much laughter and joking was shared during the evening, not to mention a tear or two.
